Speaking & Listening Through Narrative

16th Apr 2026
Learning speaking and listening through narrative is particularly beneficial for pupils with speech and language difficulties because stories provide a clear, meaningful structure for communication. In class, and in speech group sessions, the children have been focusing on narrative contexts which will help the pupils understand how language works in sequence, supporting vocabulary development, sentence structure and comprehension in a way that is engaging and memorable. Listening to and retelling stories also reduces cognitive load by offering predictable patterns, allowing pupils to practise turn-taking, inference and expressive language safely. This approach builds confidence, supports social communication skills and helps pupils make connections between spoken language and real-life experiences. We are so fortunate to have speech therapists onsite to support our young pupils.
