SCIENCE WEEK 2026
16th Mar 2026
We had a brilliant week last week exploring science through fun, hands‑on experiments! The children were busy predicting, testing and discovering how things work in the world around us. They showed fantastic curiosity and teamwork, and we loved seeing their little scientist minds in action. 🥼🧪
Here’s a look at what we got up to:
We mixed plaster and water together and put it into a volcano mould. We looked at how the liquid dried to a hard substance to create our volcano model. After decorating the volcano we then mixed baking soda and vinegar together to make the volcano ERUPT. It was great fun!
To learn about the word 'ABSORB' we used felt tips to colour on a paper towel. We then used a cotton bud and an elastic band to scrunch our paper towel into a flower shape. We put our flowers in test tubes of water and watched the flowers bloom in colour as the paper towel absorbed the water. Our flowers turned out really well! We extended this stem activity into learning about our primary colours and colour mixing. We also used the sweets 'Skittles' to support this concept by watching the colours swish and blend together when we poured hot water over the Skittles.
To study how clouds are formed and why it rains we used a bowl of water to represent the sea, shaving foam to sit on the water and act as clouds and blue food dye to show how the clouds get too heavy and it causes rainfall.
We had a lovely student teacher visitor who came to our classroom on Friday and investigated electricity by exploring which materials let electricity pass through (conductors) and which ones block it (insulators). The children experimented with items like metal, plastic, wood and fabric. They made great guesses and tested them out using simple circuits. This helped us learn how everyday objects behave with electricity in a safe, hands‑on way.
