Loughries Men’s Shed – Scarecrow & Grow

24th Oct 2025

In June 2024 and 2025, children from our Speech & Language classes, have visited Loughries Men’s Sheds (LMS) allotment at Ards Allotments, where the children learn about the growing process for fruit, vegetables and flowers. The children get to sow seeds, plant seedlings & plants in seed trays, pots, containers & vegetable beds and whilst there have a picnic on-site.

So for 2026, with a planned visit already booked in for June, the staff and the men thought about a new unique project – Scarecrow & Grow project! The project involves all the children in the speech and language class, who will firstly design a scarecrow, then as the design is agreed, the children along with help from their teachers, will make the scarecrow. So a few visits to the local charity shops to buy suitable clothing, hat, boots, then it time to build the scarecrow. On their visit to the allotment in June, the children will deliver the scarecrow to its new home at the Men’s Sheds Allotment! Whilst there the children will sow seeds and plant seedlings and larger established plants (vegetables – Fruits – Flowers).

The project will be overseen by Billy, Mark and Stephen from LMS and the staff of our Speech & Language classes (with Mr Gregory assisting too).

This unique project has been made possible by support from The Progressive Building Society who are keen to support local community-based organisations and groups in our case Ards & North Down Area: - so thanks to Lyn and Danielle who were very keen to support this wonderful project.

The project was formally launched yesterday at Castle Gardens Primary School - 23rd October 2025 and will conclude in mid-June 2026. To find out more about the project, follow this link.
