On Wednesday morning our Girls' hockey team took part in Ulster Hockey's Ards & North Down qualifier tournament at Regent House.
In brutal conditions our girls QUALIFIED for the first time in our school's history!
They started the most difficult of groups with a strong 2-0 win against Grange Park. As the weather worsened , so did the results. A 0-0 against Regent prep was followed by a 2-0 defeat against Abbey put us into a difficult semi-final against Sullivan prep.
Drastic action was needed and an SOS was put out to school for dry kit! From the depths of our PE store, just about every variance of football shirt from the past 25 years were found. A selection of Umbro, Nike, AA Sports, Pro-Star, Kukri shirts featuring sponsors such as a Rich Sauces, CJ Caravans, John Williamson Plumbing & Heating Engineers, D Crawford Schoolwear and even the Jolly Roger Strathearn Heights were couriered down to Regent. At this stage it didn't matter so long as they were dry and warm!
In blue sweatshirts, featuring the school badge from when the school was opposite the fire station, the girls flew through the knockout stage. A 2-0 victory over Sullivan in the quarter finals set up a rematch against Abbey. In a hugely competitive match between two superb teams, our girls won 1-0 and got revenge for the earlier defeat.
A 1-0 defeat to Ballyholme in the final didn't dampen the spirits before the girls collected their silver medals and their place at Stormont on the 14th April.
A huge thank-you to all the parents who helped and supported today. Thanks also to Regent House for their pitches , canteen, hall and radiators! Thanks to Ulster Hockey for organising and the Regent House students for umpiring.
Finally, a huge thank‑you to the girls for putting in such an amazing effort on a truly miserable morning. They should feel incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved — though honestly, not nearly as proud as we are of them!
